DIABETES EDUCATION AND TRAINING PROGRAM Laughlin Memorial Hospital, Inc.
Have you been told you have diabetes, or have you had diabetes for a while? Are you worried that out of control blood sugars will affect your health in the future? Now there's a program for you!
Laughlin Memorial Hospital offers an American Diabetes Association recognized program to help individuals with diabetes. The 'Diabetes Education and Training Program' is an educational program focused on self-management of diabetes. Managing diabetes is very important because of potential side effects from being 'out of control.' Studies have shown that carefully controlled diabetes can help lower risk of eye, kidney, and nerve damage. Our diabetes team can teach you how to better manage your diabetes while promoting a healthier lifestyle.
Through physician or self-referral, you can attend our eight-hour program, which will be conducted twice each month. Upon referral, individuals will receive a one-on- one assessment by a registered nurse or a registered dietitian. A group class will then be attended. If you or your healthcare team determines you would be better served by individual sessions, we will meet that need. A registered nurse/certified diabetes educator and a registered dietitian will teach each class. The class will cover the following topics:
* Diabetes Review * Nutrition * Medications * Blood glucose monitoring * Exercise * Disease complications * Personal Care
After completion of the class, a follow-up appointment will be scheduled with the diabetes team.
