Foundation FAQ
What is Laughlin Health Care Foundation? The Laughlin Health Care Foundation is designed as an organization to seek charitable gifts, manage the funds, and make these funds available to the different departments within the Laughlin health system to support programs, new equipment, special projects, and other emerging needs.
Further, Laughlin Health Care Foundation is also designed as an organization to provide community benefit programs in a variety of health care areas.
Donations are applied 100% as the donor requests. No administrative fees or other expenses are taken from gifts.
What is the development stage of the Laughlin Health Care Foundation? Legal structure of the foundation has been established. An organizational meeting held on May 4, 1994, was the first step in the foundation's activities. Founding members of the board of trustees who remain active are as follows:
C. Ray Adams, ex officio J.W. Douthat, Emeritus Cecil L. Easterly Donald C. Henard, M.D. Brandon C. Hull John W. McInturff Hugh A. Wells Charles H. Whitfield, Jr., ex officio Herbert Whitfield Jack G. Wilson
Additional board members are as follows:
Martha Bachman Terry Bellamy Brian Bragdon Jeffrey Clark, D.D.S. Larry Coughlin James A. Emory Tom Gregory Paul Hite Susan Holzschuh Kenneth Jenkins Betty C. Justis Anthony L. LaMarca Joe Morris Peter A. Reardon, M.D. Emily M. Rivers Bob R. Southerland James L. Warner Why was the foundation established? The foundation will:
- Meet the needs of changing demographics (an aging population);
- Meet long-term economic trends;
- Meet state and federal government reimbursement policies;
- Position our health system to financially address forthcoming changes in health care cost and reform;
- Continue the Laughlin tradition of improving the quality of life for everyone who comes through the doors.
Why was the decision made to establish a foundation for the Laughlin health system? It is timely because:
- Laughlin is in a strong financial position; strength is more attractive to potential donors.
- March 1995 occupancy of the new hospital, the growth in health care services offered to the community, and 1991 occupancy of the Laughlin Healthcare Center give people tangible reasons to take pride in the quality, community-based healthcare provided by the Laughlin health system.
- A foundation can raise dollars instead of the hospital borrowing dollars. A $1 million donation gives an institution the same amount of discretionary cash as $20 million in patient revenues.
How will funds from the foundation benefit the hospital and healthcare center? Donors are given the opportunity to designated use of their donations. In addition, use of unrestricted funds will provide an opportunity for departments of the Laughlin health system to write proposals (make requests) for funding of programs, equipment, special projects, etc. A distribution committee, composed of members of the foundation board and employees, in cooperation with administration, will develop guidelines for grants and will be responsible for awarding the grants, based on available funds and overall benefit to patient care.
Who is responsible for the management of the foundation? Administration and the Foundation Board of Trustees will be responsible for guiding the direction, operation, and investment policy of the foundation, while the director of the foundation (and others, as needed) will provide direct service in support of development activities.
