Laughlin Memorial Hospital presented $18,000 in health care scholarships to nine area high school graduating seniors during a special reception held May 9 at the hospital.
The scholarships are sponsored by Laughlin Healthcare Foundation and are awarded annually to graduating seniors choosing careers in the healthcare professions.
This year’s recipients were: Brittany Danielle Gulley of South Greene High School, Amie Douthat and Charles Brandon Fisher of Greeneville High School, Caroline Elizabeth Tucker of North Greene High School, and Samantha Brooke Wilkerson of West Greene High School. Additionally, Julian Martin Cutshall, Carrie Elizabeth Spears, and Sarah King all of Chuckey Doak High School; and Amanda Tipton, a student at Walters State Community College. All plan to enter or are already enrolled in a health care field of study.
Funding for the scholarships comes from the Laughlin Memorial Hospital Annual Tennessee Long Drive Shoot-Out and Pro/Am Golf Tournament.
This year’s tournament will be held June 9 and 10 at Graysburg Hills Golf Course.
During the scholarship reception, each student was presented a certificate by Chuck Whitfield, president and CEO of Laughlin Memorial Hospital, and Betty Weemes, director of Laughlin Health Care Foundation. The scholarship recipients were required to maintain at least a 3.0 grade point average during their high school careers to become eligible for the scholarship.
Noah Roark, the hospital’s director of human resources, congratulated the recipients on their scholastic achievements.
He also congratulated each student’s parents for their support and encouragement to them during their elementary and high school years. He also encouraged each student to remain focused on their health-career goal during their upcoming college years.
To date, approximately $73,000 has been awarded individuals who are preparing for careers in the health care field.
