Patient Rights & Responsibilities

Patient Rights

1.
You may expect considerate care that respects your personal values and beliefs.

2. You may take part in religious and social activities unless your physician feels it would interfere with your care.

3. You may obtain information regarding your diagnosis, treatment, and prognosis from your physician. If you do not understand, ask questions. You may refuse treatment or care to the extent permitted by law; however, refusing care/treatment, or not following instructions makes you responsible for the results.

4. You may expect a reasonably safe environment during your hospitalization.

5. You have the right to expect all communications and records pertaining to your care to be treated as confidential.

6. You may ask the names of the people caring for you and their role in your treatment.

7. You may ask for another physician's or specialist's opinion of your case if you pay the cost involved.

8. You may have private discussions with anyone you wish, but you do not have to speak to anyone not having direct involvement in your care.

9. You have the right to participate in the consideration of ethical issues that arise in the provision of your care.

10. If you are not satisfied with any aspect of your care, you may raise questions. If you do not understand English, you may ask for an interpreter. The hospital will try to provide the service you request.

11. You should be informed when students or others from outside the hospital are involved in your case.

12. In most circumstances, you have the right to look at your medical records or obtain a copy for a fee.

13. When you leave the hospital, you should have information to help you continue your recovery at home. If you do not understand, ask your physician.

14. You may expect reasonable access to care if you must be transferred to another health care facility; you may expect someone to explain the reason and/or other choices available.

15. You have the right to be interviewed, examined and treated in surroundings designed to give reasonable privacy.

16. You may review or receive a copy of your hospital bill regardless of who pays for your care, unless otherwise stated by law. You may ask about financial help and you should be told when insurance benefits or payment by others will end.

17. You will not be discriminated against in your care on the basis of race, religion, sex, color, national origin, age, marital status, sexual preference, or the ability to pay or disability to pay.

18. You have the right to complete a document known as an "advanced directive." This document says in advance what kind of treatment you want or do not want under special, serious medical conditions_conditions that would prevent you from telling your physician how you want to be treated. You also have the right to designate a representative to make decisions about your care should you become unable to make your wishes known.

19. The patient has the right to make basic decisions about the medical services they receive from their physician or other healthcare providers. The patient has the right to accept, refuse or take away any treatment. The patient has the right to give informed consent before diagnosis or treatment.

20. Any patient admitted to Laughlin Memorial Hospital has the right to expect a quick response to the reports of pain. As a patient at this hospital, your can expect information about pain and pain relief measures, a concerned staff committed to pain prevention and management, health professionals who respond quickly to reports of pain, reports of pain will be believed. You can expect state of the art pain management.

Ethics Committee

An Ethics Committee has been established to consider and discuss ethical issues arising from patient care. The committee is comprised of members of various hospital departments, as well as, medical staff members.

These professionals participate in the discussion and resolution of ethical issues and have educational resources necessary to assist them in the evaluation of the alternatives available. The committee has also established a means of educating patients in the ethical issues surrounding their healthcare. The patient or patient's representative may be included in discussions concerning ethical issues surrounding his/her care.

Patient Responsibilities

1. You should follow hospital rules and regulations as they are told to you.

2. You should answer questions about your medical history as well as you can when asked by your physician and the hospital staff.

3. You should report to your physician and hospital staff any change in your condition or problems resulting from your treatment.

4. You should tell the physician and hospital staff if you do not understand your treatment or any instructions given about your care.

5. You should follow the instructions of your physician as part of your medical treatment.

6. You should inform the hospital of your insurance company and who is responsible for payment of your bill.

7. You should be considerate of other patients, the hospital staff, and the hospital property.

As a patient at this hospital, we expect that you will:

• ask your doctor or nurse what to expect in regards to pain and pain management,

• discuss pain relief options with your doctors and nurses,

• work with your doctor and nurse to develop a pain management plan,

• ask for pain relief when pain first begins,

• help your doctor and nurse to assess your pain,

• tell your doctor or nurse if your pain is not relieved, and

• tell your doctor or nurse about any worries you have about taking pain medication.
